Small Swing

Having a great short game is important to scoring well.  There are three basic shots for the small swing; the pitch, the chip and the putt.  The pitch shot is a bigger swing and played when you need to play the ball over something or you are back farther from the green.  Here the ball flies high, lands on the green and settles quickly.

The chip is a smaller swing and played when you are closer to the green.  Here the ball flies low, lands just on the green and rolls to the hole.  Putting, the smallest swing, is usually played on the green, however can be used just off the green.  The ball will roll with no loft to the hole.

To be more consistent and get it closer to the hole, keep the ball as low as you can during the short game.  My philosophy is; big swing, big mistake where as small swing, small mistake.  Taking a smaller swing and topping it, then at least you will be on the green verses over the green with a miss of a big swing.
