Common
Chipping Faults & Drills to Fix Them
After many years in the
business, I’ve found a few common faults that keep showing up in
golfers' chipping. The first
problem is golfers don’t keep their weight on the target side (left side
for a right hander). This
can cause the club to hit behind the ball causing a fat shot or a thin
shot. Another problem of a
golfer chipping is not having their hands in front of the ball.
This fault results in hitting behind the ball or hitting the top
of the ball – both problems end in a poor result.
Of course this is only a few faults however they are the ones
that always show up.
One drill I like to use for the
weight on the left side is hold your right leg up which will make you
feel where your weight needs to be.
Then put it behind you with only the toes on the ground – this
keeps all your weight on the left foot.
Chip with the right foot staying like in this position. Do
the opposite for left handers.
This drill is used to make sure
that the hands are in front of the ball. Get another club and
place it with the club head on your chipping club grip.
This make the club very long which keeps the hands from cupping –
making you lead with your hands.
